Why Create Single Mums Rock?

I used to like to think of myself as “special”, not the average single mother!

At the time I was grateful that I was surrounded by people who helped to keep this fantasy alive. It’s amazing how many people (you know who they are ☺) love to talk negatively about single mothers and then follow up their ignorant comments with statements like “But I don’t mean you, you’re different”

Then one day it dawned on me, what makes me so special? What is a typical single mother? Why do I think I’m different and different how? and why am I so scared to be affiliated with this “label”?

It made me think. How would I describe a single mother? Not the stereotype or what society thinks, what do I really think?

I thought about the small group of single mothers that I knew and I used the following words to describe them: strong, hard word working, compassionate, fearless, beautiful, dedicated and loving.

If that’s what I know to be true, then why would I not want to be affiliated with these wonderful attributes and characteristics?

So my attitude has changed. I now rejoice in being a single mum and this website is part of this celebration. My hope is to create a space where women can come and feel proud to be a single parent.  A place where single mothers can come and feel like they are not alone, that their situation is not different or unusual. A place where single mums can get some comfort in knowing that others are going through the same “stuff”.

I’m not a psychologist, professional writer or therapist.

I’m just an ordinary single mum who believes in the power of sisterhood and has a hope that if nothing else, this site will be a constant reminder to single mothers that they are amazing and not alone!
